Ontario Bred superstar Moira captured the 2024 GI Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly Mare and Turf Saturday at Del Mar.
The 5-1 shot won in a time of 2:14.95 by half a length in the $2-million 1 3/8-mile race.
Owned by X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC and SF Racing, LLC, and bred by Adena Springs, Flavien Prat rode Moira (Ghostzapper–Devine Aida, by Unbridled’s Song) to victory for trainer Kevin Attard.
“She’s just a very special horse,” Attard told the broadcast after the race. “I’m just at a loss for words. I’m very emotional right now. It’s a dream come true and I’m just so happy for [Moira] because she’s had some tough luck in Grade Is and today she just proved that she’s the best turf horse in the world.”
The victory was the first Grade I win in the five-year-old Moira’s illustrious career that includes scores in the 2022 Queen’s Plate and Woobine Oaks. This was her third attempt at the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly Mare and Turf and she finally broke through.
Moira sold for $150,000 as a yearling to X-Men Racing. Last November, she was sold to DM Racing Ventures during the Fasig-Tipton Night Of Stars for $3 million before continuing her racing career.
